Pembs Grom Comp – Whitesands Delivers for the Welsh Junior Surf Series

Pembrokeshire Surf Club's Grom Comp took place at Whitesands Bay last weekend, with PSC hosting a fantastic day of junior surfing.

Originally scheduled to take place on Saturday 18th Oct, the good call was made to shift the event to the Sunday which produced pumping surf in the 2-4ft range throughout the day.

The heats got underway around 9am on the northern end of the bay, where groms battled admirably through the cross-shore wind to showcase their talents on head-high ramps.

Steady rain through the morning made for tricky surfing - and judging - conditions, the sun came out for the second half of the day, allowing our photographers to take beautiful shots of the action.

The wind turned more onshore as the afternoon progressed, but the swell size didn't really drop, enabling all categories to be successfully contested.

Junior surfers from Pembrokeshire Surf Club, Gower Bays Surf Club, Langland Board Riders, Welsh Coast Surf Club, and Channel Coast Surf Club put on a proper display throughout, showing real committment and skill in solid surf and conditions that were challenging at times.

All the entrants did fantastically well; judges and onlookers alike commented on how the standard of grom athletes' surfing in Wales is on the up. Across each of the heats, our young surfers were executing radical, technical manouevres in critical sections of set waves, drawing cheers from the beach-side crowd and pushing judges towards the top ends of the score cards.

All in all, a cracking day of competition that was made extra special by friends, family and organisers who all gave outstanding support from start to finish.

A huge thank you goes out to Phil Sadler of Pembrokeshire Surf Club for directing the contest. A big round of applause to sponsors, and to all those who helped to make the Pembs Grom Comp such a success.

We look forward now to this Saturday 1st November, where we'll do it all again at Gromaggedon at Langland Bay, hosted by Langland Board Riders.
