Wilkinson Sword returns to Whitesands on April 11–12

The Wilkinson Sword returns on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 April and will take place at Whitesands, Pembs.

One of the most hotly anticipated fixtures on the Welsh surfing calendar, the Wilko brings together clubs from across Wales to battle it out for one of the sport’s most coveted trophies.

Last year’s winners, Pembrokeshire Surf Club, will once again be competing on home turf. Having wielded the Sword for two years running, Team Pembs have a unique opportunity to put on a show in front of the home crowd and make it a hat-trick of Wilkinson Sword victories.

The Waves at Whitesands

Competition surfing will take place predominantly over sandbanks at Whitesands Bay.

Whitesands is an exposed west-facing beach that picks up swell from a wide range of Atlantic directions and can produce a variety of peaks along the bay. Banks often shift throughout the season, meaning wave shape and location can change depending on swell direction and tide.

The surf typically offers punchy beach-break waves at mid to high tide, while lower tides can produce faster, steeper peaks, particularly towards the northern end of the beach near the headland.

Competitors should be aware that currents and rips can develop along the beach, especially when swell and wind increase. Surfers should remain aware of their surroundings and ensure they are confident swimming in open water conditions.

As always, competitors are expected to show respect to other surfers and the local lineup throughout the event.
