Llywelyn “Sponge” Williams Crowned European Champion in Spain

Vigo, Spain – European Para Surfing Championships 2025

Team Wales has once again made its mark on the European stage, as Llywelyn “Sponge” Williams stormed to victory at the 2025 European Para Surfing Championships in Vigo, Spain.

Competing in small, technical conditions, Sponge held his nerve in a tense final, edging out Spain’s Ibon Oregi by just 0.20 points with a heat total of 11.77 (6.10 + 5.67). The result secures another major title for the Abersoch Ace, who continues to be a dominant force in para surfing.

The result also marked a huge milestone for fellow Welsh surfer Oliver Vaughan Jones, who made his official debut as a fully announced member of Team Wales and secured his first international final, finishing 4th.

“Quick trip to become European Champion…”

Following his win, Sponge shared an update on social media:

“Quick trip to become the European Champion in Vigo, Spain… Ollie was officially announced as a team member for Wales and got his first podium for Wales ????… Very small conditions sadly but the organisation was great, competition was on time with no delays… Everyone showing true sportsmanship and respect ????❤️????
…Now to get unpacked and packed for the @isasurfing World Championships to defend my title for the 4th year in a row!! LET’S GOOO!”

Sponge also paid tribute to team manager Sarah Gibbons for her leadership and thanked sponsors including Graham Heath Construction, Tyndon Accommodation and Domaine des Jeanne for making the campaign possible.

A Strong Statement Ahead of the Worlds

With his European crown freshly secured, Sponge now turns his attention to the ISA World Para Surfing Championships in Oceanside, California this November – where he will seek to defend his world title for the fourth consecutive year.

For Oliver Vaughan Jones, his first European final marks a breakthrough moment and a strong foundation for further international competition under the Welsh flag.

A Proud Moment for Welsh Para Surfing

This result highlights the growing strength of para surfing in Wales, reflecting the dedication of our athletes, support staff and community.

The Welsh Surfing Federation congratulates Sponge on becoming European Champion and applauds Oliver on reaching his first European final in national colours.

Da iawn, boys — roll on Oceanside!
