Welsh Junior Surf Series Launches in Style at Coney Beach
The Welsh Surfing Federation is proud to announce the official launch of the Welsh Junior Surf Series – a brand-new four-stop competition tour designed to nurture the next generation of surfing talent in Wales. After years of planning and anticipation, the series is now fully underway, with the inaugural stop held in brilliant fashion at Coney Beach, Porthcawl.
Hosted by the Welsh Coast Surf Club (WCSC) as part of their annual Grom Festival celebration, the opening event set a high standard for the rest of the tour. With strong community support, excellent waves, and a vibrant festival atmosphere, it was a fitting way to kick off what promises to be a major new chapter for junior surfing in Wales.
WCSC’s Grom Festival has been a staple of the local surfing calendar for the past five years, and its evolution into a platform for the first-ever stop of the Welsh Junior Surf Series marks a proud moment for both the club and Welsh surfing as a whole. The weekend saw young surfers from across the country come together to compete, connect, and celebrate the sport they love.
The next three stops of the series are already confirmed, with dates to be announced:
Langland Bay, hosted by Langland Boardriders (LBR)
Whitesands, hosted by Pembrokeshire Surf Club (PSC)
Llantwit Major Beach, hosted by Channel Coast Surf Club (CCSC) – which will also serve as the tour finale.
Each of the four events in the series is being hosted by a different local surf club, showcasing the depth of community-driven surfing culture in Wales. The tour offers junior surfers consistent competitive experience across multiple breaks, with a focus on development, fun, and progression.
Importantly, the series also carries national significance: the results from the boys and girls U12 divisions will be used to crown Welsh Junior Champions in their respective age categories. This marks a new format for junior national titles, replacing the Under-12 category that has featured in past Welsh National Championships. That decision reflects a growing focus on hosting national-level events in more critical, performance-oriented reef breaks, which are less suited to the youngest surfers.
“The idea behind the Welsh Junior Surf Series has been in the pipeline for quite some time,” said Mark Vaughan, Director of the Welsh Surfing Federation. “To see it finally come to life – and in such a strong and spirited way at Coney – is incredibly exciting. It’s a testament to the hard work of our clubs, coaches, and volunteers across Wales.”
Full results from the first event, rankings, and further details about upcoming stops will be released soon via the WSF’s official channels.
With momentum already building, and more events on the horizon, the Welsh Junior Surf Series is set to become a vital pathway for young surfers – and an inspiring showcase of grassroots talent in Welsh surfing.
