Wilkinson Sword is on this Sunday at Whitesands, BHS backup
The Wilkinson Sword is on this Sunday 12 April
The Wilkinson Sword has been called 'on' for this Sunday 12 April and is set to take place at Whitesands, Pembs, with Broad Haven South pencilled in as a backup venue, should the surf forecast dictate.
One of the most hotly anticipated fixtures on the Welsh surfing calendar, the Wilko brings together clubs from across Wales to battle it out for one of the sport’s most coveted trophies.
Last year’s winners, Pembrokeshire Surf Club, will once again be competing on home turf. Having wielded the Sword for two years running, Team Pembs have a unique opportunity to put on a show in front of the home crowd and make it four Wilkinson Sword victories in a row.

The waves
Competition surfing will take place predominantly over sandbanks at Whitesands Bay, if surf forecasts stay favourable.
Whitesands is an exposed west-facing beach that picks up swell from a wide range of Atlantic directions and can produce a variety of peaks along the bay. Banks often shift throughout the season, meaning wave shape and location can change depending on swell direction and tide.
The surf typically offers punchy beach-break waves at mid to high tide, while lower tides can produce faster, steeper peaks, particularly towards the northern end of the beach near the headland.
Competitors should be aware that currents and rips can develop along the beach, especially when swell and wind increase. Surfers should remain aware of their surroundings and ensure they are confident swimming in open water conditions.
By contrast, Broadhaven South (BHS) is a south-east facing beach that offers protection during heavier swells when other locations may be too big or blown out. The steeper beach at BHS makes for fast-pitching waves that can offer barrels and rippable walls.
Competitors are, as always, expected to show respect to other surfers and the local lineup throughout the event, wherever it takes place.
How to get involved
You know the drill: send word to your club and let them know of your keeness to do battle this Sunday. Go to thy quiver, select thy trustiest blades and show up in Pembs with the rest of your clan when the comp's called on.
Running order will be set the day before the Wilky goes live.
